Dairy diary

Meet Jo, she's 29 and lives on a dairy farm in Sussex with her husband and their dog Bess. Her father is the farmer and the third generation of their family to farm this holding on the Goodwood Estate. When she's not milking cows or cleaning them out, she's running the mountain board centre there. Join her here each month when she blogs about what's happening down on the farm.

A busy summer on the farm

cow farmer jo blog

Summer was a busy time on the farm, what with harvesting, preparing for next year’s crops and lots of cows ready to give birth. Mid-summer we spent one day putting all the first time mums-to-be (heifers) ready to give birth in a field right by the dairy to keep an eye on them. We also have a number of older cows waiting to calve. We stop milking our expectant mums two months before they are due to give them a well earned rest. They hang out in a group of other expectant mums until they have their baby and then they return to the milking herd.

Meet our farmer Jo

Hello, I'm Jo and I live on Droke Farm in the South Downs, Sussex. My dad, John, is the farmer, married to my mum, Janet, who is half-Italian. They have six children. Yep. There are six of us. Five girls and one boy. I'm the eldest, at 29, and at the moment I'm the only one who works on the farm. Esther is a teacher, Kathryn is a mother of two, Rosie is a sales executive, and Sarah is doing her A-levels. Only my 19-year-old brother Harry wants to join me on the farm. He has just finished agricultural college & in the future will become the fourth generation of my family to run it.
