With autumn just a few weeks away, a selection of hearty, cold weather produce comes into season. One of the most succulent and versatile of these ingredients is the humble pear.
Available in several varieties in the UK, from conference, blush and green, the pear can be incorporated into breakfast, lunch and dinner and makes a great grab-and-go snack for you and the kids.
If you want to make a truly impressive pear dish, try poaching them whole for 15 – 25 minutes in wine and serving them at your next dinner party. We love this recipe for Poached Pears with Amaretti Biscuits.
For an everyday meal using this sweet and juicy fruit, try adding it to chicken salad, grilling it in a sandwich or adding it to a salad with a strong cheese. For a truly robust version that highlights the pears sweetness, try it in this Apple, Pear and Walnut Salad with the added zing of feta.
While pears are great in sweet dishes, they’re also a perfect addition to certain savoury foods. Enjoy them in this recipe for Duck Breast with Honey and Pears, which showcases the versatility of the pear’s flavour.
Pears also make a fantastic accompaniment to a cheeseboard and are also scrumptious in chutney. There are so many uses for this delicious seasonal fruit, so make sure to stock up on pears this autumn.
