Tesco's commitment to only using cocoa from Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM farms for a range of Chocolate bars...
The range of Tesco Private Label chocolate bars made with Rainforest Alliance CertifiedTM cocoa is now in store and available in seven varieties. It will help to make a huge difference to cocoa farmers on the Ivory Coast. Cocoa, farmed on more than 17 million acres of tropical land, provides a means of earning a livelihood for up to 15 million farmers, 8 out of 10 of whom are smallholders and labourers.
Like coffee, cocoa can be cultivated under the shade of native canopy trees thus maintaining a landscape similar to a natural forest. Rainforest Alliance certification requires this type of farming to help expand the habitat of threatened plant and animal species, conserve natural pollinators and predators of cocoa pests.
Certification helps the farmers to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, often producing organic waste to recycle. This ensures farmers are better able to manage their land, increase their yields and often improve the quality of their crop. This helps them to negotiate a premium for their certified cocoa, and provides decent wages and that they are afforded proper health and safety protection.
