This classic combination of apples and mixed berries never fails to bring comfort and satisfaction in the autumnal months.

Preheat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan180°C. In a bowl, combine the apple sauce and mixed berries, until the mixture has a reddish, pink tinge.

Melt the butter in a small pan and add the brown sugar and cinnamon, then pour into a small tray or deep plate.

Cut off the crusts and slice the bread into strips, leaving enough bread to cut 4 circles. Dip in the cinnamon butter and use the strips to line the bottom and sides of 4 small dariole moulds or ramekins, butter side out. Press the bread firmly into place so that the slices overlap slightly.

Fill the centre with the apple and berry mixture. Cut 4 circles of bread, dip in the butter, and use to seal the top, butter side up.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, until the bread is golden and crisp. Turn on to a serving plate and serve with cream or ice cream for the perfect hot-and-cold combo.
