I used to love these when I was a kid, my best friend‘s mum always made them. Finally tracked down the recipe and make it all the time now - it‘s so easy.

Preheat oven to 180oC. Butter a large square or oblong Pyrex (I used a lasagne dish). Cream butter and sugar together. Add vanilla and eggs and mix well. Add flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well again. Add the nuts and dates and fold in gently. Bake about 45 minutes, until a skewer in the middle comes out clean. This could take longer, depending on the size of your baking dish. Remove from oven and set on a rack to cool. While still warm, sift the icing sugar over the top. When cool, cut into bars and serve.

Toast whole walnuts in the oven for a few minutes till they start to smell nutty and then cool and chop them.
