Have all the ingredients at room temperature.
Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas Mark 5/fan 170°C.
Mix the butter and sugar in a large bowl until soft and creamy.
Beat in the egg and vanilla.
Sift the flour with the baking powder and a pinch of salt. Fold into the butter mixture, stirring only until well blended.
Fold in the chocolate chips.
Butter a baking tray. Drop the mixture onto it evenly, one spoonful at a time.
Bake the cookies for 10 minutes or until the edges are golden.
Remove to a cooling rack. Continue with remaining batter. Store in an airtight tin.
