Preheat oven to Gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Grease and line a 23cm (9in) diameter spring form or other deep, round cake tin.
Cream together the butter, caster sugar and vanilla sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs to the mixture whilst continuing to beat. Add cinnamon, cocoa powder and red wine to the mixture and stir well. .
Stir the chocolate pieces into the mixture.
Sieve the flour and baking powder together and carefully fold into the mixture using a metal spoon. Pour into the prepared cake tin and bake for an hour before testing to see if the cake is cooked. Once the cake is ready, turn onto a wire tray and allow it to cool.
Always ensure you line your tin, this is essential if it has a loose bottom.
