My elderly in-laws came for afternoon tea, as a surprise I made them this beauty!
Preheat oven Gas mark 4 or 180 degreesC, grease and line 2 x 7cm sandwich tins.
Cream together butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually add the eggs, one at a time and beat in with the coffee.
Sift flour and baking powder and add to mixture folding in lightly, fold in walnut pieces.
Divide mixture equally between tins, leveling off. Bake for 20-25 mins until springy to touch, turn out on wire rack to cool.
Frosting: Beat butter, sugar, coffee and vanilla essence, until smooth and creamy.
Use half of mixture to sandwich cakes together and spread remaining frosting on top. Level off and decorate with walnut halves
