Add a little spice to your old fashioned recipe with this subtle twist on a classic cocktail. Grated fresh ginger, sugar and bitters are muddled together before adding bourbon and a splash of soda water for a traditional serve in this simple recipe. See method

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 1-2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • 2cm fresh ginger, peeled
  • ice cubes
  • 70ml Buffalo Trace bourbon whiskey
  • Soda water (optional)
  • Orange peel and crystallised ginger, to garnish

Method

  1. Place the sugar and bitters in a short tumbler. Finely grate the root ginger into the glass, add a splash of water and stir to combine to dissolve the sugar.
  2. Pour over the whiskey, adding a splash of soda water if required. Thread a piece of crystallised ginger and a twist of orange peel onto a cocktail stick and use to garnish the cocktail.
