Preheat oven to Gas 5/190C/170C. Have all the ingredients at room temperature.
Butter a cake tin and sprinkle the base with breadcrumbs.
Beat the egg and sugar together until pale and smooth.
Stir in the melted butter and vanilla.
Fold in the flour until just blended.
Spread the batter into the prepared cake tin. Sprinkle the top with almonds. Bake for 25 minutes or until the top is golden.
