Pre-heat oven to 350°F and grease a large pudding tray.
Boil the dates in water for about 5 minutes or until soft and add bicarbonate of soda.
Cream together butter and sugar until white and fluffy, then add the eggs and beat well. Mix in the boiled date mix, the flour and 2tsp vanilla essence.
Pour into the tray and bake for 30-40 minutes untill firm to touch.
Bring the cream, demerara sugar and treacle to the boil. Simmer for a few minutes and then pour over the pudding, letting it soak in slightly. Serve immediately.
