Melt the butter in a heavy pan and fry the onions with the spices

Add the peeled and chopped vegetables and saute for 5 minutes

Add the ketchup and stir. Then add the vegetable stock and pearl barley and simmer for 30 - 45 mins

Take off the heat and puree. Serve with a dollop of Creme fraiche
