Pork and spring onion sausages are particularly good for this recipe.
Divide the sausagemeat into ping pong size balls and roll lightly in flour. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium-to-high heat and fry the meatballs for 10 minutes, shaking the pan to brown all over.
Add the onion, garlic and chilli if using and cook for a further 3 minutes. Add the tomatoes, sugar and seasoning to taste. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.
Add the basil to the meatballs and stir gently and cook for 5 more minutes. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in boiling salted water according to the instructions on the packet. Drain the pasta and return to the pan. Mix in the meat balls and sauce and and serve at once with Parmesan cheese.
