I was set a challenge to provide a birthday cake for a 5 year old which was fun and appetizing.
Line and grease 2 18cm sandwich tins. Heat oven to 180 oc
Cream 8oz of butter and the sugar together in a bowl, until pale and creamy.
Sift the flour and cocoa powder in to the bowl.
Crack all 4 eggs in to the bowl and mix with the rest of the ingredients until fully combined.
Split the mixture between the two prepared tins and level the mixture. Put in to your oven and cook for 20-25mins. Once the time is up take your cakes out of the oven and turn out on to a cooling rack.
In the meantime make your chocolate icing. Put the icing sugar, cocoa powder and 8 oz of stork in to a bowl or mixer. Cream together the ingredients and slowly add the milk. Once it is all combined turn your mixer up and cream until smooth.
When your cake has cooled ice one half of the cake and put the second half on top. Now ice your cake all over.
Now you are ready to decorate. Use the matchmakers to decorate round the sides of the cake. Keep 6 matchmakers spare, these go on top to use to separate the sweets. Use the remaining six matchmakers and lay out on top of the cake to make 6 sections. Fill your sweets in the sections. And your cake is finished.
*To make the cake and icing use a handmixer or electric mixer.
*You can use any sweets if your not keen on the ones above.
*The matchmakers may need to be cut to size, do this before you have iced the cake.
