Check that your breadmaker has a Dough setting.
In a large bowl, mix the flour, dried milk powder, spice and sugar together.
Pour the hand-hot water into the bread machine pan.
Pour the flour mixture on top, covering the water.
Put the salt, vanilla and butter into 3 of the corners of the pan, and make a slight indentation in the centre and place the yeast in that.
Put the pan into the bread machine, put the setting onto Dough, and press Start.
Tip the dough out onto a floured board, once it is finished the cycle (after the mixture has risen once).
Knead the dough for around 5 minutes, incorporating the mixed fruit, and then divide into 8 equal sized pieces.
Place onto a baking tray, cover with oiled cling film, and put in a warm place to rise. (This takes about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size).
Brush the teacakes with beaten egg, and place in oven (you might need 2 baking trays).
Oven temperature: 425 F or 220 C, Gas mark 7, for 15 to 20 minutes, until risen and golden.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
If you don‘t have a bread machine you can combine the ingredients by hand, or in a mixer, knead the dough for 10 minutes or so, and place in an oiled bowl with a damp teatowel over, to set for an hour. Then go to Step 6.
