Heat the oven to 170c (150c fan). Grease and line a 20cm (8 inch) cake tin with baking paper.
Sift the flour, cocoa, bicarbonate of soda, and baking powder into a bowl and add the sugar.
Crack the eggs into a jug, add the oil, milk and golden syrup and mix together with a fork.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix everything together well. Pour into the prepared cake tin.
Bake in oven for 45-50 mins until well risen and firm to touch. Insert a skewer into the centre of the cake, if it comes out clean the cake is ready.
Upturn onto a wire rack to cool and remove lining paper.
For the icing: Melt butter in a pan and add the cocoa, stirring well until combined. Remove from the heat.
Pour in the milk, then gradually add the icing sugar. Cool for a few minutes.
Spread the chocolate icing over the top of the cooled cake. Finish with sugar flower decorations (or whatever else you fancy)

Hints and tips: This cake is decorated with some shop bought sugar flowers. Why not try some coarsely grated chocolate or berries instead?
