My little one loves to help but we often struggle with hot dishes that are dangerous to make, especially over winter.
I find that giving tasks like washing and tearing apart provide plenty of distraction.
Mixing hot ingredients in a cooler bowl can be
Boil some water in a pan and pre-heat a medium grill
Scrub potatoes (kids job), peel, halve and add to pan
Pop sausages under grill
Wash leeks (kids job), peel apart for fun &
get an adult to slice up
Melt 25g butter over a medium heat in 1 pan and 25g in another
Add leeks to one and soften with a little salt and pepper
In the other add onions with salt and pepper.
Stir occasionally
After 15 mins take leeks off heat and set aside.
Add bouillon and water to onions and let simmer for a further 5 mins.
Add cornflour to a little cold water, then add some stock from the onion pan, mix and add back into the pan. Stir occasionally and leave to sit once thickened.
Keep turning sausages and turn off heat once cooked.
Meanwhile drain potatoes and let drip for 2 mins, then mash
Add leeks to mash in a cool bowl and stir together with milk and cheese (kids can help)
Serve up lovely sausages on top of mash and top with gravy if preferred
Often little ones hate gravy so I sometimes serve this up with redcurrant jelly.
