These pretty star biscuits are perfect for serving alongside warming mugs of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. They also make delightful edible gifts – why not make a big batch and give to friends for Christmas? The biscuits can be made 24 hours in advance and kept for up to three days in an airtight container. Add the shimmer decoration just before serving. Don’t forget to screenshot the ingredients list at the bottom of the guide for the next time you go in store.
Place 100g softened unsalted butter and 75g caster sugar in a bowl and cream well with a wooden spoon. Add 1 medium egg and 200g plain flour and mix until smoothly blended.
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface and roll out to 5mm thickness. Cut star shapes from it using a 5cm five-point star cutter. Arrange, spaced out, on a baking sheet lined with nonstick baking paper.
Use a small, sharp knife to cut a small rectangular indent between two points of each star – cut from the edge to the centre to create a rectangle that's the same width as a mug lip.
Bake the biscuits at gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C for about 8-10 minutes, until the tips of the points are just golden and the centre is still pale. Cool on the baking tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once completely cooled, lightly brush the stars with edible glitter – half silver, half gold.
Serve clipped to mugs of tea, coffee or hot chocolate.
