How to master the pancake flip

Get ready for Pancake Day with our top five tips on how to perfect the pancake flip. From choosing the right frying pan to how much oil to use, we have everything you need to know to be a master flipper.

  1. Get yourself a nonstick pan

First thing's first, make sure you're using the right pan. A nonstick frying pan is essential if you want to achieve that showstopping toss. It'll ensure your pancake will flip gracefully into the air; no sticking woes here...Find the pan we use here.

  2. Ensure the pan is hot enough

When cooking your pancakes, make sure your pan is on a medium-high heat. If it isn't hot enough, your pancake won't release from the bottom and risks falling apart when it's time to toss. Most importantly, this ensures that your pancake cooks evenly and with a nice golden colour finish.

  3. Don't overuse the oil

Go easy on the oil! If you use too much, the batter will soak it up and you'll have a greasy pancake. Instead, try brushing the pan with a pastry brush or use kitchen paper to lightly grease it so you have just enough to stop the pancake sticking to the pan.

  4. Make sure the pancake is loose before you flip

Gently shake the pan and use a spatula to loosen your pancake. This will make it easier when you get flipping.

  5. Be confident in your wrist movement

Slightly tip the pan away from you, then flick the wrist in one decisive movement. Enjoy watching your pancake toss in the air...but be ready to catch it!
