A sensational spin on a British classic. This is a great way to use up leftover buns, add chocolate and custard for an indulgent and comforting pud. See method

  • 6 hot cross buns
  • 25g butter
  • 75g dark chocolate chips
  • 2 large egg
  • 250ml milk
  • 1tbsp caster sugar

  1. Heat the oven to gas 3, 170°C, fan 150°C.
  2. Cut the hot cross buns in half and butter the cut sides, sprinkle with half of the chocolate chips, sandwich together again and place in a baking dish.
  3. Beat the egg, milk and sugar together and pour over. Scatter with the remaining chocolate chips and bake for 30-35 mins until just set.
