Smooth, creamy potato and parsnip purée is the ideal baby weaning recipe to serve your little ones from around 6 months*. It takes just 15 minutes to make and freezes wonderfully, too. What's more, you can reserve some strips of potato and parsnip to serve as finger food, if you like. See method

Method

  1. Put the potato into a steaming basket set over a pan of simmering water (don’t let the water touch the bottom of the steamer) and add a lid. Cook for 8 mins then add the parsnip for 4 mins until the vegetables are soft.
  2. Purée the veg together with the milk until smooth using a stick blender or food processor, leaving out a few pieces if you would prefer to use as finger food.

Tips:

  • If your baby is ready to move onto a lumpier texture, you can roughly mash the veg with a potato masher or the back of a fork. Just make sure there are no big lumps.
  • You can serve both the purée and the finger food at the same time to help your baby explore different textures.
  • If you’d like the purée to be looser, just stir in a splash of your baby’s normal milk a little at a time, until it’s the consistency you want.

Freezing and defrosting guidelines

Freeze the purée in an ice cube tray and simply defrost and reheat until piping hot before allowing to cool. In order to enjoy optimum flavour and quality, frozen items are best used within 3 months of their freezing date. For more tips on freezing and defrosting food, read our article Love Your Freezer.

*This recipe is appropriate for babies at the first stage of weaning, from around 6 months of age. Babies will have different texture preferences – some will progress to mashed or lumpy quickly whilst others may prefer smooth, blended foods for longer. Soft finger foods can be offered at start of complementary feeding.

When weaning your baby, introduce allergenic foods one at a time and not before 6 months.
