Cheeseburger pasta? Yes, you read that right! This easy pasta dish tastes just like a cheeseburger. With crispy beef mince in a tangy burger-style sauce, top with gherkins and plenty of cheese for a speedy midweek meal that the whole family will love. See method

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp tomato purée​
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 1½ tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1½ tsp English mustard
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped​
  • 375g 5% fat beef mince
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 200g chopped tomatoes
  • 500ml beef stock
  • 200ml whole milk
  • 300g pasta, such as penne or spirali
  • 150g Cheddar or red Leicester, grated
  • 50g gherkins, sliced
If you don't have mince, cut open some sausages instead

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix the tomato purée, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and oregano together to make a sauce.
  2. Heat the oil in a large, lidded ovenproof pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and fry for 4-5 mins, until beginning to soften. Add the mince and cook for 5 mins or until browned, breaking up with a spoon as you go.
  3. Add the garlic, fry for 1 min, then add the tomatoes and the sauce and cook for 2 mins, until the tomatoes are beginning to break down. Add the stock and milk, bring to the boil and tip in the pasta. Stir, lower the heat to a simmer, cover and cook for 10-12 mins, until the pasta is al dente and the liquid has mostly been absorbed.
  4. Heat a grill to high. Sprinkle the cheese over the pasta and grill for 2 mins, until melted. Sprinkle over the gherkin slices and serve.
