Place all the ingredients into a medium pan. Bring to the boil, then leave to simmer for 15 minutes until the onion is soft. Remove the cloves and bay leaf, and season well.
Using a stick blender, whizz for a smooth sauce – or you can leave as it is if you prefer a more textured finish.
