This American favourite makes a deliciously messy treat and is a tasty way to use mince beef. Made in half an hour, your little helpers will love assembling their own Sloppy Joe's and eating it, too. See method

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 red pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 celery sticks, finely chopped
  • 1 x 500g pack mince beef
  • 6 tbsp BBQ sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 2 tbsp English mustard
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 tsp soft light brown sugar
  • 6 seeded burger rolls, halved, cut sides toasted
  • 6 mild Cheddar slices
  • ½ iceberg lettuce, shredded
If you don't have any Cheddar, try using another hard cheese

Method

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and cook the chopped onion, red pepper and celery for 5 minutes over a high heat, stirring often. Add the steak mince, breaking up well, and cook for 5 minutes, or until browned.
  2. In a bowl, combine the BBQ sauce, tomato purée, English mustard, crushed garlic and brown sugar. Stir into the pan containing the mince mixture and turn the heat down to medium. Cook, stirring well, for another 10-15 minutes then season to taste.
  3. Assemble the sloppy Joe's as if they were burgers: divide the shredded lettuce between the burger roll bottoms, spoon the meat on top and finish with a slice of cheese followed by the top half of the burger roll.
