5 Iftar recipes to see you through Ramadan

Keep your diet fresh and varied this Ramadan with Zainab Pirzada’s delicious flavour-packed recipes for Iftar. Whether you’re breaking your fast with a big gathering of friends and family, or with a smaller group, we have easy recipes to satisfy whatever you’re craving.

  1. Easy chicken curry

You can’t go wrong with a curry and this simple chicken curry is ready in just 35 minutes – great way to keep your diet fresh and flavour-packed during Iftar! It has a creamy 5-ingredient sauce that’s made in one pan to save you washing up! Add in fresh green chillies for an extra kick and serve with rice, naan or a refreshing chopped salad.

Iftar is a great chance to gather your friends and family to celebrate. You can easily double the ingredients if you want to feed a crowd.

‘It tastes super authentic but takes just 35 minutes!’

  2. Cheesy kimchi fritters

Crispy, cheesy and super umami, these simple sweetcorn fritters are a great snack or as part of a bigger Iftar spread. Kimchi is good here for salty and funky flavours and a little bit of spice. Fry the fritters for a few minutes until golden and melty. Zainab recommends serving with a spicy sriracha and sesame dipping sauce, but you could also dip into sour cream or sweet chilli sauce. They’re great for batch-cooking if you want to get ahead for Iftar.

‘These are so moreish dunked into the sesame mayo.’

  3. Creamy chicken and leek pie

For something warming and hearty, you can’t go wrong with a chicken pie. Whip up a homemade creamy Cheddar sauce with tender chicken and leeks, then top with golden puff pastry. This makes a great Iftar centrepiece if you’re hosting a crowd, or you can save any leftovers to enjoy tomorrow.

To give your pie a vegetarian twist, try replacing the chicken with a tin of butter beans – or include both for extra protein.

  4. Halloumi and chickpea salad

If you fancy something fresh, Zainab’s zingy salad is super simple to serve up. It has all the flavours of a Kachumber salad (think cucumber, tomatoes, coriander) with crispy halloumi and chickpeas for protein (and crunch!) Drizzle over a sweet and zesty pomegranate molasses dressing and enjoy those crisp and refreshing flavours you’re craving after a day of fasting.

    ‘It’s a throw-it-all-together job.’

  5. Sticky soy air-fryer wings

Making chicken wings at home has never been easier. Coating the chicken in cornflour gets it super crispy, plus it’s cooked in the air-fryer for speed. Drizzle over a sweet and spicy soy sauce for a moreishly sticky marinade and top with spring onions and sesame seeds for extra crunch. Try serving alongside rice or flatbreads for a substantial Iftar meal.
