Made with rustic bread, gorgeous, gooey Camembert, sweet apple salsa and lots of love, this Valentine's starter is sure to impress. A really easy recipe and a great way to kick off a romantic meal. See method

Ingredients

  • 125g Camembert, cut into small chunks
  • 1 tbsp soft cheese
  • 1 tbsp flaked almonds or hazelnuts, finely chopped, or a mix of both
  • 4-6 slices rustic bread, such as rye, toasted
  • handful watercress, to garnish

For the salsa

  • ½ Granny Smith apple, quartered, cored and diced
  • ¼ cucumber, halved lengthways, seeded and diced
  • 1 shallot, finely chopped
  • 4 tbsp Bramley apple sauce
  • 1 tsp cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp grainy mustard

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C. In a small baking dish or heatproof bowl, combine half the Camembert with the soft cheese and spread it out to cover the base.
  2. Scatter over the remaining Camembert, followed by the nuts. Season with a little freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 10 mins, or until golden and bubbling. Remove and set aside to cool a little. Meanwhile, make the apple salsa. In a small bowl, combine the apple, cucumber and shallot. Add the apple sauce, vinegar and mustard; toss to coat.
  3. Put the melted cheese dish and toast on a serving board or plate. To serve, spread a little cheese mixture on toast and top with the apple salsa. Garnish with the watercress.
