Hygge meals to make you feel cosy

Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’) is the Danish art of creating a cosy atmosphere, and enjoying the good things, despite the cold, gloomy weather. Think candles, thick rugs, spending time with friends and family, and enjoying delicious comforting meals.

  1. Sumptuous soups

Nothing beats the feeling that you get from a hot mug of soup on a cold winter’s night. Why not try this chunky minestrone soup, made with soft gnocchi and sweet basil, or a generous bowlful of this gently spiced carrot and coriander soup.

  5. Beautiful bakes

Nothing helps beat the blues like the smell of something sweet baking in the oven on a wet and windy day. Make like the Danes and try cooking a batch of fragrant cinnamon buns; sticky and sweet, and perfect with a good cup of coffee. Better still, bake a giant cinnamon bun for the entire family, spiced with cardamon and cinnamon and drizzled with icing. The Israeli babka is another gorgeous, fragrant cake that's sure to warm you up on a cold and chilly day. Follow our easy step-by-step instructions and you'll have an impressive babka ready in no time.

  7. Brilliant breakfast

Start your day with a little hygge, and have a wonderfully indulgent breakfast. Warm up on a chilly morning with this comforting bowl of pretty plum and almond porridge, lightly spiced with cinnamon and zesty orange. Using porridge oats, oat bran and quinoa makes it extra hearty, and almond milk makes it vegan and dairy-free. This bircher muesli with pears, maple syrup and cinnamon porridge is another sure way of starting the day the right way - it can also be made in advance to save time and effort and is wonderfully fragrant.
